What is a dedicated server?
A dedicated server is one that is managed for the exclusive use of a single client. It might contain a single, large website, or it might host numerous websites in a shared hosting environment. The server might include all the ‘physical hardware’, or as is now more common, a virtual private server which is a ‘segment’ of a server, but operated in a way that it’s completely independent of other ‘virtual servers’ also running on the hardware. Redrook the server for shared hosting can also dramatically reduce the ongoing costs per hosted site. It allows greater flexibility and control, a level of security that can be set by the client, and scalability of the utilised services e.g. website disk space constraints and ingoing /outgoing data.
How is a server managed?
The client can either manage the server themself (using your own staff Server Administrator) or outsourced to a third-party contractor. The responsibility of the day-to-day operation of the server is borne by the client and their Server Administrator. Some of these services might be outsourced, and some will be done in-house. If the server breaks, the client is responsible for fixing it, at their own cost. Redrook will take the hassle out of managing the the Server for you. They still give you access to a Control Panel (such as cPanel), and they will work with you on any needed customisations. Red Rook will upgrade, patch and secure your server as needed to keep things running at all times and up-to-date.
When do you need a Virtual Private Server?
A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is used when there are special requirements of a web site and a shared web hosting plan is not suitable. A VPS gives greater isolation from impact of other web sites, allows for custom ‘tweaks’ to Apache, php, the operating System, and the implementation of additional modules, scripts or code which may not be possible with a Shared Hosting account (or plan), because of the potential impact on other websites on the same server. All of the Redrook server hardware is configured to have for more resources than are actually required. This means that no VPS server hardware is overloaded with too many VPSs.
Replication and Uptime
Server hardware is more reliable than when Redrook first started hosting operations some 23 years ago, and all of Red Rook’s servers are high class IBM Server hardware. However, in the event an entire server fails, a Dedicated Server would need to be rebuilt from scratch and restored from a customers backups (if the customer has them!). It can take considerable time to bring the server back online. All of Red Rook VPSs are REPLICATED to alternate hardware every day. If server hardware fails, they enable the replica of your VPS on the alternate hardware and you can be back online within minutes.
